A strong memory I have about Rome? The Carabinieri. A military branch of armed forces, also performing police duties. This painting is about an Italian Carabinieri wearing the characteristic mantello, which is a very thick wool cape worn during historical ceremonies or parades.
I used to work in the center of Rome—I'm talking about the center, in Piazza Venezia. I used to clean the main museums in the square, and from the square, I was able to see every day the Colosseum from afar. I was lucky enough to see a couple of these ceremonies.
I wanted to recreate a Baroque atmosphere with this painting. The background is extremely dramatic, the painterly style is very classic, but the subject is a modern subject. His gaze is firm and steady to symbolize the responsibilities and the danger that he faces every day.
